This contest is simple – create simulations for the 10 selected cakes (link to spreadsheet below)…win cash…get a job creating effects. Think of it like an audition with a cash prize. But the cash prize is just a bonus. The real prize is being selected as a finalist for a job creating effects alongside the Finale team. If you’re selected, you’ll get paid to create effects that will be included in catalogs and available to Finale 3D designers around the world.

The spreadsheet contains all the details for the 10 cakes you will need to create to enter the contest.
Using only Visual Descriptive Language (VDL), make simulations for all 10 cakes listed in the spreadsheet. Your objective is to create simulations that look as similar as possible to the videos of the real-life cakes. The limitation is that you may not use the effect editor. This means that the effects in each cake must be human-readable VDL. In addition to visual similarity (effects, angles, firing pattern, timing, etc.), make sure that your cakes match the information provided in the spreadsheet. For example, if the spreadsheet specifies that a given cake has a size of 1.25″, be sure the cake you create is 1.25″.
Tip: Use the Glossary of VDL Effect Terms as a reference. You may also find it useful to create unique effects as single shots, then arrange them as sequences on the timeline, then use ‘Combine as cake effect’ in the Effects menu to assemble the final cake.

The Finale team will judge the contest entries by comparing the simulations to the real-life cake videos and all other details in the cake spreadsheet. The contestants who submit the most accurate cake simulations will become finalists for a long-term paid opportunity to create effects for Finale 3D supplier catalogs. The contestant who submits the best overall cake simulations will also receive a $500 prize.
