I was building a consumer cake from Sunwing that had some falling leaves effects I can’t replicate well.  The first one appears to be two shots that do white falling leaves with a strobing effect. The other is a falling leaves pattern that explodes into intense crackling.  I can’t seem to get the falling leaves effects to work with a ‘to’ directive that would work. Does anyone have advice?

Hey Barehm, that’s a really nice cake. In this case, I would use the VDL term Waterfall or Horsetail instead of Falling Leaves. Both are soft broken effects but the difference is that Falling Leaves are made by coating lightweight sheets of substrate with pyrotechnic composition whereas a Waterfall or Horsetail bursts contain traditional rolled or pumped stars. I think it’s a good bet the actual construction of this cake uses stars and I think you can get a better result with a VDL terms that uses stars as well.

Thank you DrewFinale – that worked very well. Good VDL advice and some some pyro manufacturing background!

I’ve noticed that using popcorn crackling gives me a secondary break and hence a sound node when I look in the effect editor.  Something like “intense crackling” doesn’t act as a break and hence I get no sound. Is this intentional?

Did you try crackle flowers? I think that’s the one you want…

Is there a comprehensive, current VDL reference effects list for finale3d 2024-05-18?

Yes. The VDL Glossary ( https://finale3d.com/documentation/vdl-effect-glossary/ ) is a great resource and covers VDL effects and terms. As far as I know, the only terms missing are some beta terms that were just introduced last week (and are still only in the beta release). The VDL glossary also has convenient example videos for all the different effects.

Along with the VDL Glossary, there’s also a section of the software documentation dedicated to VDL that’s worth a read through for anyone who hasn’t checked those pages out. It covers VDL colors, firing patterns, general syntax, and just about everything else about VDL.
