I’m having a hard time sorting out a realistic stage airburst effect VDL. It seems airburst is a recognized VDL phrase but I’m getting silly durations (5,6,7 seconds), these are instant effects. Probably something easy I’m missing. Need to produce an accurate sim for a client and this is the final holdup
Hi Pyro_138300000, welcome to the forum and thanks for posting. Be sure to head over to your My Profile page to update your display name and profile picture. Even though this issue was already resolved offline, I wanted to add some info here for the benefit any user who ends up in a similar situation in the future. If you run into a situation where an event in your script doesn’t get a rail/pin (i.e., module/cue) address when your address your show, or you find something missing on a report or on your labels, there’s a good chance that something is amiss with the “Type” for one or more of your effects. Here are some examples: 1) Lines of script with a blank “Type” are not addressed or included in the e-match count. If you have empty cues in your show, they will be represented as rows in the Script window, but the Type column will be blank. As a result, the empty cues won’t be given a rail/pin addresses and they won’t be included in the e-match count. Empty cues are also typically not included in exported script files. 2) Effects with a “Type” set to “flame” are not included in the e-match count. Some values for “Type” don’t receive a rail/pin address and/or aren’t included in the e-match count. For example, items in a show with the Type set to “flame” won’t be included in the e-match count because the “flame” Type is reserved for flame shots from a flame machine (that don’t require individual e-matches. If your show includes liquid fuel mines or fireballs that require e-matches, change the Type for the effect to “ground” in the Effects window (and the Script window will be updated automatically). 3) Effects with “light”, “sfx”, or “flame” in the “Type” column do not get labels. “light”, “sfx”, and “flame” effects are not included when generating labels. The reason is because these effect types are meant for DMX fixtures, which, unlike individually wired pyro effects, don’t need individual effect labels. For example, if your show contains 100 hits from a single flame machine, you wouldn’t want to print 100 labels. 4) Effects with “light”, “sfx”, or “flame” in the “Type” are not included on product reports. “light”, “sfx”, and “flame” effects are not included on product lists and pull sheet reports. The reason is because these effect types are meant for DMX fixtures, which aren’t pulled and prepared the same way as individual pyro effects. If your show does contain DMX fixtures such as lights, flames or sparks, look for the report titled “DMX Fixture Setup”. Type also dictates other important aspects of effects. To learn more about Type, check out Why is ‘Type’ so important? What depends on it?
ok, when I can I send you a small video recreating the steps. Thank you
Hi Pyro_57510000, welcome to the Finale 3D forum and thanks for posting! Be sure to head over to your My Profile page to customize your display name and profile picture. The Finale Generic CSV export format is designed include all the rows in Script window. Even if some rows are visually combined in Finale 3D to represent Groups or Chains, the exported CSV file will always include every script row. If you only need to export one script row per rail/pin address, then a different export may be better. Here are a couple options: Option 1) Address your show using the CSV firing system and then export the CSV firing script file by going to ‘File > Export > Export firing system script…’ Option 2) If you have the Pro version of Finale 3D, you can create a custom report from the Script window to include exactly the columns that you need and combine rows of script that are part of the same Group, Chain, or any other criteria you like.
Thanks so much for updating these! I will look into the effects I have created and make sure they are changed.
Thanks for the heads up on these effects. I fixed up all the cakes you mentioned, go ahead and give them another try. The root cause of the issue is a longstanding deficiency in VDL that we recently fixed. The deficiency was that the VDL term “Go Getter” was being translated to “Scattering”. In other words, in older releases of Finale 3D, anytime you typed “Go Getter”, it was being replaced with “Scattering”. This was no good because Go Getters and Scattering stars are not the same effect. Now that Go-Getters and Scattering are being treated as different effects, all I had to do to fix the cakes was replace “Scattering” with “Go Getter” in each cake’s VDL.
Hi Pyro_67840000, you can add your flame machine to Finale 3D and create effects for it by following the instructions in the Help Center documentation article titled Creating DMX fixtures and effects.
Hi Moises Luis Exposito, it’s possible there is a bug. To know for sure, we’ll need to reproduce the issue. We are happy to investigate if you can send a show (FIN) file along with step-by-step instructions on how we can reproduce the issue to support@finale3d.com.
